Is it OK to wear a Flyers jersey in Times Square, Central Park and around Penn Station?
I'm visiting Manhattan with a friend in a couple of weeks for a weekend, and given what the weather is likely to be (mid-50s), shorts and a hockey jersey will probably be comfortable: yes, I know that I'll totally look like a tourist, but since I AM a tourist, I don't mind. Anyway, she (who is not into sports) sees nothing wrong with wearing a Philadelphia Flyers jersey around Manhattan. I think I'd be asking for a beatdown (or at least a lot of middle fingers). Who's right?

No one will care. I'm guessing it might only be an issue if you were actually at a Flyers/Rangers game and wore that into the stadium. Mob mentality at sporting events has gotten people killed before for wearing the "wrong" team's gear.
As a tourist walking around it won't be an issue at all. Last time I was in NYC I rocked my Chicago and North Carolina t-shirts all day.

No one will even notice that you're wearing a Flyers jersey. No one notices what anyone wears in NYC. They might notice if someone were wearing nothing, but other than that, no one cares.

Nobody will care. As Justin mentioned, most of the people you will interact with will be fellow tourists, or New Yorkers used to dealing all day with tourists. While New Yorkers love their teams, they couldn't care less that a visitor supports another team.

Most of the people you see in New York City are tourists. No there isn't anything wrong with it, it's a free country.
