In the northern hemisphere, the Coriolis effect causes wind and water currents to bend to the right (clockwise). Cold heavy air flows south from the north pole and is bent west, forming the polar easterlies. Warm air rises at the equator drawing air from the north which bends to the west, contributing to the trade winds. The Coriolis effect bends the westerlies and trade winds slightly clockwise in the northern hemisphere.

The Coriolis effect is the apparent deflection of objects when described relative to a rotating reference frame. On the earth's surface objects near the equator are travelling eastward far more rapidly than an object near either pole because of the eastward rotation of the earth. So an object moving away from the equator will seem to deflect in an eastward direction. When we stand on the surface of the earth - as most of us do - we will experience this apparent deflection in a number of ways. Here are a couple of examples:

If you look at a satellite image of a hurricane in the northern hemisphere storms will rotate in a counter-clockwise direction. In the southern hemisphere a storm will rotate in the opposite direction. Check out the video in my sources as a graphical representation of this effect will be far more clear.

My favorite example of the Coriolis effect is that of "Big Bertha". These were a number of massive guns the Germans built in the First World War . They used these guns from a distance of more than 75 miles to shell Paris. At this range the Coriolis force had to be taken into account to accurately target the gun from such a range.
