I need help with subnetting?
It's about actualy subnets and actualy hosts.
in my current issue it's network address is 194.220.135.0 for a class c address.
I can see that the subnet is 255.255.255.240 and that there are 16 hosts and subnets because 2 to thr power of 4 is 16.
But is that the ACTUAL number or did I forget to add or subtract something? I don't understand why there are two numbers that can't be assigned and have to be accounted for. Is this right?

" because 2 to thr power of 4 is 16. "
I hate the "x to the power of y" way of looking at it. To me, simply subtract 240 from 256 and you have the size of the subnet. 256 - 240 = 16. The entire size of the subnet is 16. There are two addresses that are always reserved, the very first address, and the very last address. The first address is used to identify the subnet, and the last address is used as the broadcast address for the subnet. So you always subtract two. In this case, 16 - 2 = 14, so there are 14 addresses usable by actual devices on the network
