Breaking up atoms?

I get how atoms work. Quarks, neutrons protons, all that good stuff. But if one were to (theoretically) take a block of iron, and do something to it to turn it into singular iron atoms, how would one do that something? Is it possible? Please leave links to websites you used, if possible.

If you want to heat it till it vaporizes, then you have to heat the iron in an inert gas such as Argon, or else if there is oxygen in the system, then you will oxidize the iron. This is the basis of a graphite furnace.
