Snap traps are very humane. The hydraulic shock wave generated by the impact of the bail knocks the rat unconscious instantly. The body dies without the brain regaining consciousness, so the rat literally dies before it knows what hit it.
Catching a rat alive and taking it somewhere is moving your problem to someone else's neighborhood. That's just wrong. Either it's a problem for you - in which case it would be a problem for anyone - or it isn't a problem. Since you want the rat gone, you owe it to everyone around you to not shift your problem onto them.
Rats are prey animals. They have evolved into the natural niche of being FOOD for something else. They aren't predatory, ecologically significant, or rare. Their chief defense against predation is having babies very quickly - which they WILL do if you don't get them under control. So go ahead and set the traps with a clear conscience.

White rats are great pets - - - but I wouldn't mess with a wild rat: they'll bite, carry diseases, fleas, etc. As elhigh recommends, use a kill trap and get rid of it - - - - not to mention that like mice or squirrels, they often come back after removed from the area.
