I have just deleted a program which still appears to be installed. The desktop icon has gone and it doesnt appear in add/rem' Where is it?

If you uninstalled it via the correct method (from list of programs) then it's gone. I don't understand why you think it is not gone because you didn't elaborate. At any rate, restart your computer and that should complete the process.
