How do I delete a portion of a video taken with a camera?

Update:

I took a video of my wife sky diving but want to remove some of the footage. Is there an easy way to do this? For example, the video is 70 seconds long and I want to delete the first 50 seconds.

i am old school videographer, and i would caution against any alteration of the original video file. Even a "trim" could result in making a video segment unusable in the old days because you couldn't edit a clip that did not have 10 seconds of good video before the desired shot. that was a constraint of deck to deck editing. trimming means you lose the first part of the video. but perhaps later you want to put the skydiving scene to music and you find in order to fit the music bed, you need a few more seconds of video to lead into the main sequence. guess what, you can't do that if you altered the original so that "extra" video no longer exists. fortunately, all good quality video editors, including Windows Movie Maker, work in the non-destructive mode. That is, the editing mode is virtual, no changes are made to the source documents. once you have a program or clip that you like, you "publish" that as a new file leaving the original unchanged. The new file will have the offending portion deleted which is what you need.

That would be editing the video... so... with a video editor on your computer. iMovie is bundled with Macintoshes; MovieMaker is bundled with Windows.

Since we don't know what camera was used, we don't know if the video recorded by the camera needs to be transcoded to a format the editor can deal with. Once the video is in the video editor, cutting the unwanted parts is simple enough... Then export or share the video to a WMV, AVI, MOV or MP4 video file for sharing, uploading, making a DVD... lots of other things to do with it...

By using a video editing app on your PC or Mac. It's called "Trim" if the segment is on the beginning or end of the video. Very easy to do. Some cameras have the "trim" feature built into the camera. Read your manual to find out about yours.
