Finally got bright and checked the reviews at Goodreads.com for "Tiger Eye", #1 in the series. "Dirk & Steele is a detective agency", one "called into the situation because [the heroine] needs extra protection" and that she's part of because she's family.
If anyone wants to tell me whether there's a Ms. Dirk or Mr. Steele, and something about them, I'll happily award you Best Answer, but I'm now reasonably content. Certainly not going to wade thru one more het romance for the details!
