IS Pull ups important if i want a strong back?

    Pull-ups (or chin-ups) are an excellent exercise for the latissimus dorsi ("lats"). However, that's not the only muscle in your back... The lats move the upper arm "down". You also have the trapezius, the major upper-back muscle, that moves the arm straight back and is also responsible for raising the shoulder girdle.

    So, for a well-developed back musculature, you need to address all those movements, and consider your lower back as well.
