What might it be?

As I was sitting here at my desk in my basement office (quietly), a critter ran in, went around my chair, behind the waste basket, back into the corner, then retraced its steps and back out. It was solid dark brown, about the size of a chipmunk, with its hairy tail held straight out to the rear as it went. It wasn't running in fear; more like it was looking for something.

Update:

The critter in question was kind of trotting. Low to the ground (short legs), purposeful.

Update 2:

Western NY snow belt. Used to have gerbils - not one of those. I'm in the country (rural) and have mice all the time. It looked like it might be hunting them.

Location would help, sorry. For example, there is something called the Mohave ground squirrel that might be it - but if you are in the UK, I doubt you would see one of those. :)

Other options might be somebody's escaped pet gerbil, some type of desert mouse, etc.

    I suspect a weasel.
