They do work!
You may get motion sickness though, some headsets have found ways to work around it while some are still struggling with it, just make sure you read up on what's available!
I would personally recommend the Oculus Rift for PC gaming when it comes out next year, Project Morpheus for PS4 which also comes out next year, or if you have a smartphone you can get Google Cardboard just to try it out!
