Is there any way to safely install a window AC unit in this situation?
I live in hot and humid Philadelphia, and I am looking to install a window unit to cool a 2nd story bedroom where I keep my dog when I'm not home. The room is 180 square ft with 9' ceilings and gets direct sunlight. I would only be turning it on if the temperature goes over 90.
My concern is that my rowhouse (a rental) was built in the 1930s, and there is only one outlet in the bedroom that would require a 20' extension cord to reach the window. How can I tell how much the circuit can handle? Is there any way I can make this work without creating a fire hazard?
My other option is to put the unit on the first floor near an outlet, but that would increase the risk of burglary.

Get a 12 gauge extension cord.
Honestly, a better solution would be to get a window fan to circulate the air and to put window shades, drapes or UV darkening film on the windows to prevent the sunlight from heating up the room. Animals adjust better than we do to temperature extremes. Unless the dog is an arctic breed with thick fur, it probably will not be that much bothered by the higher temps as long as it has lots of water.

Get an electrician to put in a surface mount outlet. Get the landlords approval. Personally I would foot the bill as it is your dog. I'm sure he would have no problems with it.
