Guitar Scales Q?

I know the name of the notes over the guitar neck but how do scales work? Does it have to start on the first note (letter) of the scale and go in the same order it shows or are they all just a foundation and u can use any note it says at whatever order. Please Help

No you do not have to start or end a lick, phrase, etc. on any certain note. Of course using the root note at the end of a lick will "resolve" that combination of notes, but you do not always do this. Let's take the A minor pentatonic scale as an example. It is one of the most simple and widely used scales for beginners, as well as more advanced players in the blues and rock genre.

So in that scale you have 5 notes, A C D E G. So if you are playing a lead from the A minor pentatonic, you will only use those 5 notes, but the order in which you use them is up to you. Playing them in order will make it sound like you are just practicing a scale rather than playing a lead, riff, etc. Hope this helps.

The numbers are the scale degrees. I.e. "1" is the first note in the scale and "4" is the fourth note in the scale. These numbers won't help you with fingering. Look around a bit more and you'll find charts that show you which fingers to use. They're everywhere...
