The same thing happens to me - so I can't really help you with that specifically.
But I would never bother doing something like that to change the color of an object. I'd just add a layer style --> color overlay and be done with it. Or if I really felt compelled to change the color with no added effect, clipping mask, etc., I'd load the layer (hold the ctrl key and click on the layer icon in the layer palette) and fill it with the new color.
That's both the good and the bad about Photoshop - there are a million ways to do anything!
