Is it illegal to view other staffs personal emails in the workplace ?

Update:

I have recently discovered that a manager is viewing other staffs emails at work in a London business office.

Is this normal practice and is it illegal ?

    If it is a work email then it belongs to the company and they have every right to view anything that belongs to them, staff should never use work emails for personal business

    Don't know about UK but in the US you should never assume anything done at work is personal and it is perfectly legal to do since you are supposed to be working while you're at work. If you want privacy, then use your cellphone with your own personal data plan to check personal emails.
