Gateway laptop turns on, screen blank.?
Okay, this nv53 laptop of mine is doing some strange things. When I try to start it, the blue 'on' light lights, internal fan starts but nothing else. On rare occasions I can get it to start almost normally except it's agonizingly slow. These problems are of a sudden on-set nature, as aCouple days ago it was fine. The only thing was it told me that I needed to replace the battery. Could that be the cause? I never use the battery, I run it on the power cord, ac/dc adapter, but with the battery installed.

The very first thing you should see is the BIOS splash screen that shows before any software loads. If you never see anything at all, it's probably not a software problem. Connect an external monitor (connect your laptop to a TV set or desktop monitor with a cable). Does the laptop screen get a faint white glow or remain completely dark? If it's dark, you might have blown (dropped it?) a special CFL lamp that lights up the screen -- not a terribly expensive fix. Watch the hard drive indicator lamp -- it should flicker for a while until the boot process finishes, then slow dramatically, suggesting everything's working but the screen has failed. Take it to a shop and try to get a free estimate from somebody who knows what to look for. In the meantime, Starrysky is right -- pull the battery. Force it Off by pressing the Power button for 5 seconds, then Power it back On. Try that 10 or more times (I have an old Toshiba that sometimes takes 5 tries before it will boot).
