I need braces but can't afford them, any alternatives?
So 6 months ago my dentist told me I needed to get orthodontics to fix my teeth(crowding). So he referred me to an Orthodontist and we got a specialist referral form from our medical aid, had it filled and everything but it turned out that the orthodontist doesn't work under our medical aid scheme, so we asked them to find us one but they said our scheme doesn't pay for specialist. We can't afford a better one nor can we afford to pay for the treatment privately, so can anybody give me any alternatives on payment? Or anything I can do, like I honestly cannot smile because my teeth look so bad. It's affecting me psychologically and I just need help...why are braces so expensive anyway??

Go back to your dentist and ask to be referred to an orthodontist who can treat you on your scheme. Braces are expensive because they have to be tailor-made, fitted and adjusted often, and are made of materials that aren't exactly cheap. Over the course of your treatment you're paying for a lot of materials and a lot of man-hours from highly educated (and so expensive) people.

I am glad the taxpayer doesn't have to pay for ths. Most orthodontist will set up payment plans so you can opt for that. Plan to pay around $6000.
