It all depends what you are looking for. What are your priorities? If you are asking why the Mazda 3 over the VW Golf it would be better value for the dollar and Japanese engineering a subcompact economy car is on par if not better than German engineering. Mazda has the best blend of having your cake and eating it too. It handles the road exceptionally well, a top speed of 135 mph and 40 mpg on the highway.

The Mazda 3 S will handle the same, be more reliable, use less fuel, and be cheaper to own.
The GTI will be faster, accelerate quicker, brake harder, and have a more timeless design, but it requires premium fuel.
The Mazda is the smarter choice. The GTI is the faster choice.
