Did Confederate soldiers in the Civil War consider themselves Americans?

Their states officially declared secession. They fought against Americans. Did they consider themselves Confederates, Southerners, or some other non-American title?

Most considered themselves 'citizens' of the states from which they came. Virginians saw themselves as Virginian, Texans saw themselves as Texan...and so on.

What many fail to understand is that the concept of "America" was very different until Reconstruction. For many, even in the North, America was still a union of individual states, each with their own distinct culture. This had been true since 13 separate colonies banded together to fight for their collective independence.

Yes, they did. They called their new country The "Confederate States of America"
