If "cattle" is plural, what is its singular counterpart?

Update:

As I understand it, a cow refers only to females and a bull refers only to males. What is the singular unisex term?

yet-knish! is correct. The singular would be cow or heifer, bull or steer. If you know more about the cattle involved, you could also use a generic or specific breed term, such as "longhorn", "shorthorn", "Hereford", or "Guernsey".

In common terms "cow" would be the singular of "cattle", though dictionaries tell us that "ox" (plural "oxen") is the most basic word for all creatures of that sort.
