Why do a lot of homes I am looking at in South Africa have bars on the doors and windows?

Lol, crime is a massive issue. Certain parts are really perfectly fine without crime, but we are always ready for a possible crime. The problem is that people target certain homes. If you do not have heavy burglar proofing, they will try to come in- and they usually will. If you suddenly put up a lot of high fences ext, they will think there is something you are hiding in there and will attempt to enter. Thus, we all usually just do it and get it done as soon as you build/buy a house without it to avoid potential burglaries.

Just to give you an example, at my previous house (I'm white but it was a black neighborhood) and here is quite a big issue with racism. so they targeted our house and we had a few major burglaries. We woke up one night to find a guy wrestling with our dog trying to come in, another time my father had to hold someone at gunpoint in our yard until the police arrived. Another time we all just suddenly fell asleep where we were and we woke up a lot of hours later to find the house close to empty, they gassed us and broke the burglar bars and door open.

Those are just a few examples, but we installed an alarm system and the bastards were scared all of a sudden. Anyway, we moved about ten years ago and we are living in a very peaceful neighborhood now. No burglaries as of yet. The only problem is cable theft, a few times a week they would steal the electricity cables (overhead cables) at night and we were left in the dark for a day or so. Fortunately the municipality started installing other types of cable which they can't sell for scrap, so this problem came to an end.

Even here at our current, peaceful home we had the alarm go off at 3 in the morning about two weeks ago. The beam in the back yard got triggered so I responded (even the 2 minutes for ADT to arrive can bee too long, if you don't respond you can be dead within seconds if unlucky) When I went out with my pistol, a few seconds later the neighbors alarm also triggered.

So yes, crime is a big issue and we avoid any temptations! Fortunately, you can slip right past the crime if you take the precautions
