if you mean war on american soil.i think it would be like war in russia or china.large landmass.high population.harsh terrain,whoever invades would surely stand too lose.

The USA is a nuclear power. The war "in the US" properly can't occure. It is better ask, how the war would be FELT like in the US. Well, it would felt like a nuclear strike - fire storms, radiation everywhere, total destruction of everything and a nuclear winter afterwards.
