How do I get a url name before the website is made?

I have a website name that isn't taken yet or at least nothing comes up when I google it. How do I get the name saved before the website is made? Do I still pay someone for the name? How does this work?

I would recommend GoDaddy.com. You can buy domain names even if you don't have it pointing to anything yet. You DO have to pay for it, but then you own it and you can do whatever you want with it. Also, even though nothing comes up when you google it doesn't mean no one owns it. When you type it into godaddy.com's domain finder, it will tell you if it is owned or not.

  • 1) You register a domain name (eg. mylovelynewdomain.com)

    2) You set up a hosting service somewhere to host your domain; could be with the company you registered the name with, could be anywhere else you want

    3) You then set up whatever services you want to run under that domain, which could be web, e-mail, FTP, whatever

    4) If you decide to run a website at, say, www.mylovelynewdomain.com or shop.mylovelynewdomain.com or some other sub-domain of your main domain name, that then becomes your specific URL for the specific service running at that location

you need to purchase the domain name from a web hosting company

then they will give you a server address to save your website to and be visible on the internet
