In most of the western world religion is met more with apathy than opposition, so why this obsession with atheism in the US?

Immaturity. Like children, they lash out at that which 'hurts' such as cabbage, broccoli,celery, bedtime rules, religion etc , and then grab and hug a nice new furry toy (atheism, rebellion) screaming if anyone dares to take it from them

Christians in the US fear that atheists might be right, and that the Bible is nothing but childish fairy tales. That largely explains there obsession with atheism.

They obsess because they are afraid.

Afraid of reality, and atheists are a serious threat in their minds, to their pretense.

It is a sad lot that must pretend, not really believe that pretense, yet feel fearful enough to feel compelled to try to sell it to others.
