    Let the particle accelerate for time = t1 and decelerate for time= t2.

    The velocity acquired after t1 seconds is = a t1

    a is the acceleration rate.

    deceleration rate is 3a. The time to come to rest is

    at1 = 3 a t2

    t1= 3t2. But t1+ t2=8. This gives t2=2 and t1 =6. It accelerates for 6 seconds and decelerates for 2 seconds.
