What kinds of dogs don't shed a lot?
My girlfriend has been wanting to get a dog. I really don't want one, mostly because they are messy, dirty, noisy, smelly, and expensive. Is there a dog out there that fits the following criteria:
1. Medium sized
2. Minimal shedding
3. Minimal barking
4. Easily trained
I appreciate any help.

Whippet. It is like the medium sized greyhound, only more energy than a greyhound and hard to find outside a registered breeder (those who have whippets, keep their whippets).
Greyhounds fit all your requirements except for 1... but you can find some small females at around 50 lbs. Retired racers actually come pretrained from the track to walk well on a leash, don't go potty in the kennel (house), and know the "leave it" command.
Granted, neither will be border collie level training, but they are easy to teach to be a good pet (they require a soft hand). A simple No is enough to make them think the world is ending because of the naughty thing they just did.
Greyhounds and whippets, in addition to not shedding much(ALL dogs shed), do not have a very oily skin... hence they actually do not get that doggy smell associated with most other breeds.
My greyhounds - one only barks when I tell her to, the othe only barks when scared... and even then it is more of a woof than a bark.

Miniature Poodle, 15-18 inches hi, about 20 to 25 pounds, low to no shedding. Grooming is required every 8=10 weeks.
Poodles are the number 2 most intelligent dogs, very easy trained.

I second on the Mini Poodle as I used to own one. They are rather high maintenance but are easily trainable and you could always just teach yourself to groom your dog. If your not wanting a breed that will need to be groomed monthly then maybe look into a Schnauzer ( also high maintenance ), Whippet or a Wire Haired Fox Terrier.

Here is a link of medium sized dogs, I'm sure you're more than capable of taking it from there: http://www.justdogbreeds.com/medium-dog-breeds.htm...

Never buy a dog as a gift, if she wants one then let her choose it and offer to pay for it.
The only dog that fits your criteria is a stuffed dog from Toys R Us.

Maltese fit 2-4 but they're really small.

You just described my dog. He isn't any particular breed that I know of, though.
He only barks if I give him a treat lol
