I have a 98 corolla that I want to take the engine out of and put into a new toyota. Does is it have to be another corolla?

And if so do it have to be the same year?

Swapping the same engine is relatively straightforward because all the wiring and accessories will line up. So first find out what engine you actually have. Chances are that same basic engine was used in a number of years and different models.

Alternatively there may be other engines that fit in that model, or can be with some relatively simple mods. But you may find you have to change ECUs, wiring harnesses, exhausts etc. The further you go from the original engine, the more work needs to be done.

If it's a Nth American model, chances are you have 1ZZ-FE engine that is used in a wide range of Toyota vehicles and a couple of GM ones.
