Tegus are definitely not in between small and big; they are advanced level animals for experienced keepers only and reach at least 3' (smaller end) to 4.5' (larger end). If you're aiming for something in the 1' range (keep in mind this includes the tail), I would aim for a couple common starter geckos that have been mentioned, as well as Uromastyx, Steppe Runners, and Emerald Swifts. If you're looking in the 1' - 2' range, Bearded Dragons, Chuckwallas, and Blue-Tongued Skinks are good starter animals.

Some decent sized lizard include:
Anoles
Leopard Geckos
Crested Geckos
African Fat Tailed Gecko
Bearded Dragon ?
Tegu ?
I marked the bearded dragon and the tegu as a question mark because I did not know whether they would be the size that you are looking for.
