Hello
If you have a reset button you probably have a gas boiler. It will normally have a pilot light (small flame) which ignights the main water heater. Sometimes when the wind changes direction or is very strong it can blow out the pilot light. (The gas heating part has to be ventilated). You did the correct thing as the reset button has lit the pilot light so everything should be back to normal. If it start happening fairly often you may need to get it checked

Generally once isn't a problem.
You might want to consider changing the thermostats now, what that trip means is either the upper or lower thermostat didn't shut off when it should and it got too hot. If the high limit fails the next result will be opening of the pressure relief valve, which dumps hot water where ever the tank discharge pipe is directed to.
Upper one is about $15 dollars http://amzn.to/1GkpPwd , lower about $10 http://amzn.to/1f0XNjp ,and you don't have to drain the tank to change them, just turn off and disconnect the wires.

It's safe. I do it occasionally when the water plays up. I've had no problems since.
