It depends on the condition ofyour current mower. If itis runing well then keep it and buy a new gas powered trimmer (either a Sthil or a Toro). If he mower is old or not working well replace it first. Fluufernut is right - buy a new machine not someones else's hedache. . A walk behind sellf propelled mower is essential to a lawn care business. as it is more versital and costs only about $400 for a excellent quality new Honda or Toro brand mower. You can buy a new gas powered trimer for $200- 300. See the May 2015 issue of Consumer Reports Magazine for desciptions and recommwendations.

Riding mowers are limited in where they can cut but you can do lots really quickly. If I was just doing yards, I would buy a Toro Lawn mower that pulls itself. Saves a lot of work and goes everywhere and it always starts. I would wait and buy a gas trimmer because they do more work but are too heavy for me. You should buy what you need to do the most work first or what you don't have. You can't do other people's yards without trimming and a riding mower doesn't get close to things and so you need to mow around things rather than get close and break off branches.

Unless you are good at mechanics......small engine repair for example, avoid Craig's List. Any mechanical mower will take maintenance other than putting in gasoline. You can get books on lawn mower maintenance..it is better to learn on a smaller walk behind than a riding as there are more things to fail. Trimmers are up to you. We trimmed many a lawn before trimmers came around with hand trimmers, probably why we had such strong hands than today.

Buy the mower first. and keep using his trimmer.
Then when you earn more money. Buy him a new trimmer and keep using the old one he has loaned you for yourself.
That way you will show great character to your grandfather and gain his repect even more and not feel guilty about using his trimmer..
You can tell him now that you plan to buy him a new trimmer. That way " you will feel right " about using it.
If you do it that way , he might just say " Hey Boy, , just use it and dont worry about it " because enjoys helping his grandson. Then you wont have to feel guilty about using it.

depends on a few things....how long is your summer cutting season?...and what is the size of most of the lawns you cut?
Lawnmower shops are same as bicycle or sewing machine or vacuum shops, they have refurbished models as well as newer ones. Do not buy off of craigslist. People get taken for their money and it's dangerous as well. Home Depot or a Toro lawn mower shop would be good places to start to look for your mower.
As you know, there are dangers associated with equipment so be sure you have good insurance for you AND YOUR BUSINESS that covers you and anyone who works with you or around you, and be sure you have your business licensed.
