Why have Israel and United States and other countries nuclear warheads?

Mainly because other Countries have them. The US has them, so Russia wants them. Russia has them, so China wants them, etc, etc.

As for Israel, it's a paradise surrounded by Hell. A Jewish state of around 7 Million Jews, being surrounded by hundreds of millions of Muslims.. It's best to have a deterrent - Nuclear warheads are one hell of a deterrent.
