can the dr tell you if you have something by taking a sample of your discharge or does it have to be a Pap smear ? Basically is a swab of discharge more efficient than a Pap smear ??

NO. A pap smear is more effective because it tests for more than just infections. The pap smear is also used to detect certain types of cancers that would not be seen from a simple swab. If you are afraid of the pap smear just let the doctor know so he or she is very gentle. It doesn't have to hurt and it only takes a few seconds to get the smear done anyway.
