What is your opinion about the armed civilians that are taking it upon themselves to guard military recruiting stations?
http://news.yahoo.com/pentagon-asks-armed-citizen-...
Last week, a 24-year old man attacked two recruiting stations, killing four Marines and a Sailor. After this incident, armed civilians have started showing up at recruiting stations to guard the offices, stating that they are doing it because the Pentagon isn't.
While I see where they are coming from, I had reservations about it because of the possible security risk that allowing untrained civilians would have at the stations, to include one incident where one of the guards had a negligent discharge outside of the station. I also mentioned the possibility that any of the armed guards could be an agent working on behalf of ISIS and could turn their weapons on the recruiters, as well as the possibility of a guard harassing potential applicants they personally don't think have any business in the military.
After posting my concerns I was promptly thumbed down repeatedly, called an anti-gun nut, was told that anybody that wants to serve should have no problem seeing open weapons since they will in combat (even though unlike in combat, they wouldn't be armed while going to a recruiting office) and eventually had my comment deleted due to it being repeatedly reported. Since what I posted wasn't popular, what do you think? Should we welcome the armed civilians or are they a security risk?

I absolutely agree with you. I work at a reserve center similar to the one in Tennessee. One of the attacks was at a recruiting office and one was at a reserve center. Obviously, I am not going to discuss our force protection measures on an open forum, but we are on top of things. In the state I live in, everyone has weapons. I don't need Billy Bob and his boys showing up with guns. I don't know who they are, what their background is, their true intentions and their level of proficiency with firearms. In this day in age, there are no uniformed enemy. Your next door neighbor, the nice old lady down the street and the kid who cuts your grass could all be part of a terrorist cell and you may never know it. I agree with you and anyone that disagrees does not work where I do, a reserve center in the middle of a city. The recruiters are in the same boat. They are trying to make mission and armed civilians outside their offices are going to scare away potential recruits. It doesn't help that a recruiter (not from our two branches of service) had an ND and injured himself the day after the attacks. At least in my branch of service, we have gotten some guidance that will assist in the protection of our sites. I will leave it at that, but AD I absolutely agree with you.

No. Random dudes with guns outside a recruiting station is going to end poorly. Having thought about it now that things have cooled down some, I will now support allowing recruiters to carry a side arm while on duty.

While I understand the reaction- it's still a one-off event.
And nothings going to repeat in the near future.
If they're so concerned- why not stand guard in front of schools who've had many more of these events, or theaters?

Most of the armed civilians are vets from the military and all of them know guns. I think they should be thanked for protecting the very people willing to go die for us in foreign lands. They should not have to worry about dying in their own country because of stupid nonsensical laws.

They're buffoons playing soldier.
When you see a guy wandering around with a gun, it is a Schrodinger's cat situation.
