Squidward is a "wet blanket" type character, portrayed as desperate, annoyed, and pretentious... His ego is very fragile and self esteem very low. These feelings are perpetuated by the outside world's opinion of him. He projects his own fears onto others and because of his sour attitude no body really likes anything he produces; it's all slightly wrong. These distinctions make him a more realized character and provide so many moments of tragic comedy.
