How close are Urdu and Hindi?

That is are the languages mutually intelligible? Could an Urdu speaker and Hindi speaker carry on a conversation like Brits and Americans or are they more different than that?

I am referring to the spoken language of course. I realize they are written with different alphabets.

Very close. So much so that Hindi movies are watched in Pakistan avidly, and Urdu serials in India...esp. in North/north westen parts of India. There are certain words though which may need some explaining to do from either side. But no problems. Same grammar rules apply, so sentence construction is also same.

Well, when it comes to everyday language then it's almost similar. When it's come to formal language, its much more different.

The difference comes because of vocabulary. Urdu has much borrowed words from Persian, Turkish and Arabic while Hindi has from Sanskrit.

All in all, it's understandable. As an Urdu speaker, I never had any difficulty talking to some Hindi speaker.
