Christians. What's your opinion on the following piece of information?
Inquisitors were given full absolution by the catholic church for the torture and murder of heretics.
The reason an Inquisitor could kill a heretic without breaking the commandant "Thou shalt not kill" is because to commit heretical acts was considered an act of spiritual suicide.
At the time it was heretical for women to wear trousers and for the bible to be spoken and read in any language but Latin.
Bare in mind that the the inquisiton officially ended in the 19th and 20th century.
This is not me preaching. I just wondered what your opinion on this more cruel piece of Christian history is.

My opinion is two fold. On the one hand there are indeed many cruel episodes in Christian history that we have to own up to and repent of. The Crusades, Inquisition, Wars of Religion, Witch Burnings, Wars of Colonialism, Homophobia, Sexism, participation in the Slave trade by some Clergymen. These things have to be grappled with, especially since they are so unlike the life and example of Jesus Christ.
Second though.....a lot of our impressions of the Inquisition that we have is actually based on pseudo history and not actual facts. For instance.....the Inquisition is recorded to use torture for only 1% of all the cases that they tried during it's over 700 year history and many incarnations. Second often times(especially the Medieval one) the Inquisitions were actually set up to restrain the secular state since heresy was a crime at the time under secular law because it was seen as treason against the King. The Inquisitorial Courts were set up to actually prevent people from being executed by the State which is why 98% of those tried by the Inquisitorial Courts were acquitted.
The Inquisitions also surprisingly enough influenced the development of modern western legal systems because of the fact that Canon Law influenced secular law. The ideas of the presumption of innocence, trial by jury, etc were introduced into Modern Secular Law in the West because of the influence the Church courts had.
Here is actually a good documentary to watch on the subject.

This is perfect! Shows perfectly....and you only scratch the surface
that RD is not and was not biblical Christian.
Not to say there are no followers of Jesus in this political power structure.
I could list so many points that Catholic does not follow the bible.
And RD definitely wiped out Christians ruthlessly...a very bad time.
The judgment allows this to catch these.

My opinion is probably the same as yours. That it was wrong.
It's easy to see where the church has been wrong in other centuries, because the culture has changed. Extremely hard to see, much less correct, the errors our own religion makes in our own time. Yet, we have a duty to try.
