CHEAPEST/easiest transit from Zurich to Venice?

My sister and I will be traveling from Zurich Switzerland to Venice Italy. We fly into Zurich on 9/4 a friday. We want to use public transportation to get us to Milan, where we will stay one night and then the next day (9/5) leave for Venice. Anyone have experience with these public transit systems or any tips are much appreciated. THANK YOU!!!!

Any particular reason why you cant drive - some beautiful scenery along that route. To Milan is a 4hr train - at about $45 for both. Milan to Venice is

abt 2.5hrs but for some reason its $85 for 2. European Train travel is as good as anywhere and can be booked in advance online. Watch out for bag snatchers.
