Ah, but Chloe, you're the one who asked the question. Around 70% of Americans currently self-identify as Christians. How much of that is social pressure is impossible to say. If you live in a community of 2000 and don't want to be socially ostracized, you might choose to pretend to be Christian in order to fit into the community. How you would answer a poll is anyone's guess, but I have no doubt there are atheists warming the pews on Sunday's for just that reason. Certainly the vast number of prison inmates identify themselves as Christians, but then they have the possible ire and persecution of bigoted prison guards to worry about if they don't. The only certain thing is that atheists are persecuted in America, mostly at the hands of bitter people like our anonymous troll there, so it's understandable why some people might pretend otherwise. That's going to change, though, and the fact that atheists are beginning to push back is what so many believers find offensive--they're so used to being able to bully atheists that they think of it as a right. Change is coming.

Yes, the majority claim to be part of a religion and to believe in a god even though they don't follow the religion. Most Americans who claim to be Christians rarely go to church, don't have much of a clue what's in the Bible, and don't know much about the doctrine they say they believe.

PEW is a scientific study organization -- In the latest study (2015) they found that 92% of the UK are not atheists.

If everyone who claimed they were Catholic went to Church there would not be enough pews in the church to seat them all. If all who claim to be Born Again Christians, were to practice their faith, they would have to stand outside the church. Jehovah's Witnesses practice their religion and so have two or three congregations going at different times to one Kingdom Hall. I have gone into a Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan only to fine one old lady in the church. Most people today are home on Sunday morning but I never noticed that until I became one of Jehovah's Witnesses. On her forehead was written a name, a mystery; Babylon the Great, the mother of the prostitutes and of the disgusting things of the earth. And I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the holy ones and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus." This is how the Bible describes all religions that do not teach the truth. Revelation 17:3-6 Jehovah's Witnesses are imprisoned because of their faith and for refusing to kill their brothers in warfare because of the governments. Most religions condone war and join forces with the governments in killing one another, no matter whether Catholic killing Catholic just for an example. Jesus commanded his followers to "love one another" just as he loved us. In fact, the outstanding mark of true Christians is that they have real "love among themselves."
