It really depends on what sort of genre you're into, but here are my favourites. I'll put an asterisk next to the ones I would highly reccommend. I'm also from the UK, so my sense of humor and the comedies I like might be different to yours, but here it goes:
Comedies:
Friends*
Modern Family
New Girl
Miranda
The Inbetweeners
Gavin & Stacey
Crime
Prison Break*
Dexter
Breaking Bad
Sherlock
Mystery
Orphan Black
Pretty Little Liars
LOST*
Sense8* (this is new on Netflix and is fanastic)
Supernatural dramas
Doctor Who (scifi more than supernatural)
The Vampire Diaries
The Originals
Charmed*
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Once Upon a Time*
Merlin* (this has a lot of comedy in it too.)
General dramas (these are probably targeted at a younger female audience)
Orange is the New Black
Gossip Girl
My Mad Fat Diary
I've also just recently started watching Sons of Anarchy (I'm on episode 5) which I would also highly recommend (it's genre is crime.)
Hope you find something you like!

I mean its over but it's one of the best sitcoms. The last two seasons weren't that great but if you get really invested into it the end will be fantastic. I would also recommend modern family. Recently it has gone down hill but it's still pretty good and by pretty good I mean okay. Those are the only two non animated comedys that I would recommend. As far a animated i would recommend The Simpson's which is hilerious. American Dad is a little extreme I mean it will blow your mind some of the things that happen are just ridiculous. It's a bit bloody and has some gore. Those two are more targeted towards adults. Now for kids I would recommend The Amazing World of Gumball. I've heard that Sponge Bob Square Pants has gone a bit down hill.

Psych is my all time favorite, the filming in the first season isn't as great but they're hilarious and there are a lot of pop culture references that are fun to hear.
I just finished the first season of Sense 8 and it was really good, and I would also suggest Harper's Island which is a murder/mystery mini series which unfortunately is no longer on Netflix but the other two are!
