Does anyone still do Brass Rubbing these days?

Some years ago when I visited old churches in the UK I would see people

making brass rubbings of medieval wall

memorial brasses.

Was this hobby just a UK thing, or did

people in other countries do it too?

I have never seen it outside the UK (or what used to be under English influence in the time the brasses were made) and most of the cathedrals it used to happen have stopped it. Likely because it happened so often that it disrupted visitors more than acceptable.

There might still be some brass rubbing going on, but it will not be in the most popular churches and cathedrals.

I've seen it in the US, mostly in New England and in the South (usually Civil War buffs).

    Yes, it's still done.
