Adding an open shelf below cabinets...thoughts?
I have a fairly builder basic kitchen with shaker cabinets in great shape. I'm considering moving the cabinets up and adding a moulding so they reach the ceiling, and then adding a shelf at the current height for convenient storage of everyday items.
I like the idea, and have no problem keeping the open area tidy, but I guess I'm concerned about resale. My life isn't such that I can plan how long I will be here, and I want any changes to have mass appeal.

Sounds like a great idea to me. the trend now is for more open shelving in kitchens. As long as the relocation of the cabinets does not make the bottom two shelves in them unreachable, this should be fine. This is only one of a myriad of details a potential buyer might consider when deciding whether to buy. So unless you think you might be moving within a year or two, do what you think is best.

Doing that would hurt resale of the house because only a very tall person could even use the upper part of the cabinets if they were moved up.
My dad lowered the countertops in my mom's kitchen because she was very short. All the realtors that preveiwed the house when it went up for sale mentioned it and did not like it. What you might do is add a shelf under some of the current cabinets and then remove it when you market the house later.
