Car Insurance for brand new car?

Not all policies cover the same things. Your policy covers whatever you decide to pay to have it cover.

If you decide to pay for only liability coverage, then it covers only what you do to someone else, and does not cover anything that happens to your car.

If you decide to pay for collision coverage, then it also covers damage to your car from crashes.

If you decide to pay for comprehensive coverage, then it covers, fire, theft, hail, floods, etc.

I would check the declaration page of your policy; that gives the basics of your coverage, the dollar limits and any deductibles. If there's something you don't understand, ask your agent for clarification - that's what he/she's there for. Hopefully you opted for more than the minimum amount of liability & medical coverage than your state requires; you should also have uninsured/underinsured coverage. Since it's a brand new car, I would strongly recommend collision & comprehensive coverage; in fact if you got the car through a loan or are leasing it, the bank/finance company/lessor will require full coverage.

Read the policy to see what it covers. Your state likely has an Auto Insurance Buyers Guide; just plug in that phrase with your state into any search engine and it will show up. You should read the buyers guide.

What is covers and the actual amounts of coverage will vary depending on what you buy. To satisfy the law it must cover a minimum amount of liability. To satisfy the loan it must cover comprehensive and collision.

You buy coverages to meet" your "needs. Usually liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorist, towing, rental and medical. You need to speak with an agent who will help you choose what you need.
