Considering being a male model?

Hi, I was thinking of being a male model. I know that the hours vary and can be unpredictable. My concern however is the average salary. I have read that the average salary for a male model is over 40,000 in my state. However I came across some other websites that mentioned some models had to work second jobs to pay off debt, and they only earn over 18 grand.

Ok ~ first off, you obviously need to take take in your appearance, you have to have confidence, but not arrogant ~ then you need a portfolio to submit to an agency ~ or take around some of the agencies [if they want you, they will then have their professional shoot you so that they have pics to submit to clients] Be careful where you get your first shots done, there are a lot of people out there who say they are professional, and charge a lot of money for not very good results. You need a full set, by that I mean, head, half body shots, full length etc. colour and black & white is an advantage ~ what I usually do with someone starting out, is to say that they pay for an hour of my time, and my materials, they get a full set for no more than £100, sometimes less depending on where they live ~ this covers my outlay, and gives them a chance. Good luck

A successful male model will probably make that much or more. Most people won't be successful.

Modeling is a per gig type of deal - you don't get paid regular salary. In between gigs you will have to do something else, especially as you start off. And modeling isn't one of those things you get better at with time - our ageist culture means your stock goes down, not up, as you age. Most models are like most actors, singers, artists, etc. Most don't make it. Do this if you enjoy it, but don't assume just because you kind of like it you'll be successful.

An average of 40K does not mean that they all earn 40K. It means that many earn a lot less than 40K and a few earn more.
