A basketball team played 86 games and won 10 more games than it lost. Find the number of games the team won.
Please give me an example on how I can get to the answer, not just the answer. Best answer goes to the first, AND most clear explanation. The examples in my book are confusing enough.

Assuming there are no draws, if the team won w games it
would have lost (86-w) games and so w-(86-w)=10
Solve to find w.

L = number of games lost.
L + 10 = number of games won.
L + (L+10) = total games = 86.
2L + 10 = 86 =>
2L = 76 => L = 38;
the number of games won is L+10 = 48.
