How to use and attach fishing leader?

Question

Please help! I bought a rod with a bunch of basic stuff but I can't find anything on how to use the two leaders that came with it. I'm a complete newbie. 
On is fishing line and is Y shaped with several metal loops for attaching things. The other is metal with two extensions that I believe are for hooks.
Seriously every guide I've looked at repeats blindingly obvious facts like how to put the rod together and has nothing on this except why they should be used.

I think you mean  a shock leader?
This is a length of line with a heavier breaking strain tied on the your main line.
This takes the strain off the main line when casting the end tackle whilst sea fishing.
Preventing the end tackle and lump of lead from breaking the main line and flying uncontrolled through the air possibly killing some body near by.
If your sea fishing in the UK it's a good idea to join the association of sea anglers as they have been giving free insurance to members in case this happens so long as you take reasonable precautions.

If you are doing just  plain simple fishing,....You want  a  " swivel snap "....( kind of resembles a saftey pin )..on the end of the line,...so you can easily change  hooks....Get the hooks with a short piece of line already  attached.  They come  in many different  sizes....I usually go with a  # 6..or # 8,,plain shank,...Gold color,...but the choice is up to you,...just try different  things

Those ones that have the twisted wire are called wire arm bottom rigs and there are different ways to use those.
If you do an online search by typing in how to rig wire arm bottom rigs you will see what I mean by there are many different ways of rigging them.
