when / how would i use "ce" & "cette" ?

  • Thank you ;) .. i really should have guessed that it would be tied in with the gender.. and there is no rule for determining that except "practise makes perfect"

    "Ce" is used with masculine nouns. So "this book" is "ce livre", "this teacher" is "ce professeur".

    "Cette" is used with feminine nouns. So "this door" is "cette porte", "this window" is "cette fenêtre".

    One exception is when you get a masculine noun beginning with a vowel. Then instead of using "ce", you use "cet".

    So "this egg" is "cet œuf", "this tree" is "cet arbre".
