Think less and smaller. You will have to sell or store your larger furniture and only use the smaller things. Like use a loveseat instead of a big sofa, a smaller coffee table, only one upholstered chair in the living room instead of two etc. If you can, hang your TV on the wall, put a bookcase under the sconce and only put the books and other things you use a lot in it. Store or sell the rest.
You could use a patterned area rug in front of the smaller sofa that faces the fireplace, with the wall mounted TV above the fireplace. You could use the large wall opposite the fireplace for wall hung art and may be able to fit a small dining table and two chairs into the area opposite the wall sconce wall. No matter what you do, the look will be intimate and cozy, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
btw, check out that fireplace before using it. The place where the sides meet the back wall of the fireplace look iffy to me, like there are holes in the masonry there. I'd open the flue and light a small fire to test it out before putting any furniture into the cottage.

Downsizing is the way to go! Sell or give away anything that you don't LOVE! Keep only the things you really love or really need. Your life will become so much simpler and you will feel so much more free without all the STUFF! The main thing to do with a small space is to keep it simple and light. Don't overcrowd the rooms. One big couch is better than a loveseat and 2 chairs. Use area rugs to differentiate space. If you want to put a dining table in a living area, just put an area rug under it to make it look like a separate space. Keep windows light with white blinds or sheer curtains.

Here is my suggestion. If I were you, I will put a bed in the middle. Let the bedside face to the fireplace. Put a small sofa or a chair near the window in case you may like to do some readings. It is cozy to read near a window. If you need a dresser table, put it together with the chair. You can choose a beautiful bedding set. It will add more elegance to your room. You could also choose a cozy bedside rug in order to make your room sweet. There is a website which sells home decorations http://www.insdeal.com/ If you do not want to go to the store, you can check on this. Hope my recommendation could help.

If the room you show is the kitchen/lounge, I'd like to see the kitchen part of it. If the fireplace is your only heat, look into an efficient insert, because it doesn't look like a practical size.
