What will make the birthday unique and memorable?
What ideas jump out as fitting for the birthday person?
Think: before , during and after. Apply your ideas with this in mind.
Opt for ideas that have IMPACT, over those that might cost a lot of time or money. Impact is what we're after.
Tailor your ideas with the b-day person in mind first.
Try and chose ideas that move, involve and capture the attention of the party-goers.
If the party idea is unproven -- i.e. you have never done it before -- get some help or do a practice run.
The more ideas and theme elements you have the better your planning must be.
Enjoy the thrill of planning and organizing. If you're not enjoying it, this will show up in the party! Grab some help.
What makes it all work?
The reason why people walk away from a party and say:" that was a lot of fun!" or "we had a ball" is usually NOT because of the ideas chosen or the theme used. They are important but plenty of ad-lib or spontaneous parties happen and get the same result. Some have no ideas at all and certainly no theme to speak of.
When you are considering ideas for a party, choose them and make them flow naturally during the time. They are part of the experience -- but not the whole show.
Best Birthday SUGGESTION
What ever party idea you consider, select 5 or 6 and fit them into a theme if you like the idea of having a theme. Ideas first then theme. That way you can recycle your ideas later on for other themes.

Pros - You're not lonely. You feel like you did something different that day.
Cons - People getting drunk (if age is not a problem) , people getting into arguments, you getting ignored, your bf or gf is hitting on someone else, you might have people sick in your house, people trash the house, people are loud and inconsiderate, you find your "friends" aren't really friends, people ending up sexing in your house ( if age is ok).... list goes on for the cons, not much pros ... sorry
edit: oh yeah and people only come to ur party because they want a party.. not to celebrate your b'day

-Memories. Everyone should have one big birthday in their lifetime. I think it makes for good memories. So make sure you (or you designate someone) to take pictures for you! And then you can make a scrapbook from those.
Cons ;
-Expensive
-Big clean up job
-Stressful trying to make sure all of your guests are happy & entertained.
