I put an avocado stone 2/3s into some moist perlite a few weeks ago, it has rooted but nothing else - why?

I was removing it to discard it when I felt the resistance - shouldn't something be happening to the top by now aswell?

Avocado pits can take a while to sprout, mine took 1 month in between March and April, yours is probably about to sprout.

The roots come out first. Make sure the top is out of the soil.
