What to do if someone files taxes in your minor s name ?

The past tax season someone filed their taxes in my son s name at that time he was 16 he is now 17 but the irs sent a paper saying that we have to pay $4,000. They didn t file him as their child they filed in his name, what should I do?

    Contact the IRS. They have identity theft divisions dedicated to exactly this problem. It's very common, so don't worry too much.

    Call the IRS. There's probably a number to call on the letter you got. Sounds like identity theft.

    report this a ID theft, show the IRS your child's information, ie b'certificate etc, maybe copy his SS card, school records, medical records etc to show that this income cannot be his

    Your son fills out IRS form 14039 and sends it in with copies of his ID. Use the address on the letter.

    It sounds like identity theft. He should respond accordingly.
